I’ve had braces twice in my life—once as a child, and again as an adult. After the first round, by default, I was given these clear plastic retainers (not pictured) that wrap around the entirety of your teeth. I hated these! They collected saliva (resulting in me drooling all throughout the night), and they generally felt very intrusive in my mouth. Needless to say, I eventually grew weary of wearing them and stopped. A few years later, my teeth had gradually returned to their gnarly, twisted condition, and I became (once again) self-conscious and insecure about my teeth.
Well, lesson learned. After enduring another round of orthodontia (2006-07), I decided I was’t going to let the cycle repeat itself. When the time came to get a retainer, I insisted on trying something other than the standard clear plastic drool collectors I’d hated all those years ago… AND I’M SO GLAD I DID. These old school “Hawley” retainers feel so much better in my mouth, don’t collect pools of drool, and are way more durable. It’s been 6 years and I still don’t mind wearing them at night.
So, for those of you who have braces, or will be getting braces… don’t simply accept the cheaper and mouth smothering retainers they’re going to give you… ASK FOR THE HAWLEY!
